Many people thought Jim Fox was staying on at Davidson to take over for long-time head coach Bob McKillop down the road.
However, the chance to be a head coach right now was something he could not pass up. Fox was named the 16th head coach of the Appalachian State University Men’s Basketball program last Tuesday by ASU Director of Athletics, Charlie Cobb.
Fox, 40, started his tenure at Davidson in 2001 and coached there for 13 seasons, which included the last two years with the title of associate head coach.
During his coaching stay at Davidson, the Wildcats won the Southern Conference regular season title in 10 of his 13 years there and won the SoCon Tournament in six of those seasons. Fox was a key member of the coaching staff that helped Davidson reach the Elite 8 in 2008, thanks to a tremendous season and tournament run by current NBA star player, Stephen Curry.
Before starting his collegiate coaching career, Fox spent five seasons as the associate head coach at St. Dominic High School in New York as well as the school’s athletic director.
“I’m extremely grateful to Chancellor Dr. Ken Peacock, Chancellor-elect Dr. Sheri Noren Everts, the Board of Trustees and Charlie Cobb for the opportunity to lead the Appalachian State men’s basketball program,” Fox said at his press conference. “In addition, I’d like to thank Coach McKillop and Davidson College, especially the players, for making this dream a reality. Over the past 13 years, I’ve been very fortunate to be a part of an institution with a rich academic and basketball tradition. I look forward to helping restore as well as build a program that achieves excellence in every regard.”
Fox will certainly have his work cut out for him from day one. Senior Tevin Baskin graduates and so far, two players have reportedly left the team due to academic reasons, including Jay Canty who was expected to be one of the team’s top players this past season. Canty was suspended nine games for academic reasons earlier in the year.
