Former assistant coach Nathan Colvard will move into the head coaching role on the junior varsity men’s basketball team, left open by the departing Daniel Waln.

Waln recently took an assistant coaching job at Lees-McRae College and the timing worked out perfectly for Colvard to take over as the JV head coach, as well as earn a teaching position at the high school. Colvard recently finished his secondary education degree at Appalachian State University and will be a social studies teacher.

Colvard got his coaching start during junior league basketball season with close friend Andy Blevins a few years ago.

“Mark Hudler asked us to do it, and we both enjoyed it a lot more than we thought we would,” Colvard said. “Then Coach Waln asked me to come on board and help him with the JV program at the high school.”

He has spent the last two seasons as a JV and varsity assistant coach.

During his high school days at ACHS, Colvard played for Scott Grubb his freshman year and Bill Key his sophomore year before spending two varsity seasons under Marc Payne.

Colvard is already game-planning for the upcoming season and learning what he needs to do to help the program.

“I think the number one thing with JV players it to prepare them for the varsity level. It’s my job to make sure they know the fundamentals, plays and terminology that they’ll need when they move up with Coach Grubb,” Colvard said.

He also echoed the importance of being a role model for the players and helping them become better young men to represent themselves, their families, the school and the community as a whole.

Coach Colvard has worked hard through the years to reach this point, and has been supported by a lot of people along the way.

“I’d like to thank my family and my parents. They truly are the best parents and they have always allowed me to become the person I am,” he said. “I’d also like to thank Coach Grubb and Coach Payne for this opportunity. They are both great coaches and to be able to pick their brains will be invaluable.”

Colvard expressed his gratitude to Coach Waln as well for giving him a spot on the coaching staff two years ago and teaching him so much about coaching.

“He’s (Waln) a great young coach and I can’t wait to watch him coaching on TV at a high major college in a few years,” said Colvard.

The JV Huskies are the defending Mountain Valley Conference Champions.
