The Ashe County Husky Vanguard Marching Band returns from competition in Bristol, Va., with two first place trophies, a second place trophy and superior rating.

“We are very happy,” said Carrie Miller, the Ashe County High School band director. “The band has worked really hard this year and that has shown in their performances.”

The Third Annual Battle Marching Invitational took place Saturday, Oct. 12, with most of the school’s competition coming from high schools in Tennessee and Virginia.

Miller said the marching band’s 48 members performed their halftime show, which consists of music from Michael Jackson, the Beatles, Frank Sinatra and Beethoven.

“We have an hour and a half every day in class and we practice on Monday nights with hired staff working specifically with the different sections,” she said. “The kids are also required to go home and practice every night. The (students) are constantly working on it and they dedicate a lot of time when they sign up for band.”

The marching band received first place in the Visual Ensemble Category for its Color Guard and first place for General Effects. Miller said ACHS had the highest score of all bands in the general effects competition.

On top of that, a “Superior” rating was given to the band’s performance.

“Superior is the highest rating you can receive,” Miller said.

ACHS’s marching band placed second overall in the AAA division.

Richlands High School in Tazewell County, Va., won that competition. Richlands would go on to be named Grand Champion for having the highest overall total score.

This weekend the ACHS marching band will compete in the 23rd Annual Freedom Classic Tournament at Freedom High School in Morganton.
