Timely scoring propelled the Huskies to the third round of the 2A playoffs with wins over West Stokes and Charles D. Owen, where the game-winning goal came in the final minutes of both contests.
On Wednesday against West Stokes, the Wildcats took an early 2-0 lead with a goal in the seventh minute and another tally in the 15th minute.
At halftime, head coach Wes Rousseau made an adjustment by switching to a 4-3-3 and putting more pressure on the outside against the West defense.
“The 4-3-3 really opened things up,” Rousseau said.
The Huskies responded with two goals on back-to-back possessions win the 52nd and 53rd minute.
Alexis Ramos scored on a header and Cesar Ruiz fired a close shot past the Wildcat keeper to tie the score.
Ashe nearly took the lead in the 63rd minute when Miguel Ramos had a great scoring chance but saw his shot stopped on a great save.
With only three minutes left in the contest, A. Ramos got his second goal of the game on a rebound that would send Ashe to Black Mountain on Saturday to face the Warhorses.
“We (Ashe) played so tight initially, but played like they are capable in that second half,” said Coach Rousseau.
Ashe took a 1-0 halftime lead in its second round contest Saturday, but that lead would be short-lived in the second half. The third seeded Warhorses came out strong and scored two quick goals to move back in front, 2-1.
It took awhile, but Frank Ledezma found the equalizing goal late in the half.
The Huskies had no desire to play an overtime game. Miguel Ramos came through with the game-winner to clinch a spot in the third round.
Ashe will be on the road at Shelby on Wednesday. Shelby, an 11-seed, upset sixth seeded Chase High School in overtime to reach the next round. Game time is unknown as of press time.
