Ashe County sent two doubles teams and two singles players to the Mountain Valley Conference Championship in Elkin last week.

Top seeded Alex Church and second seeded Jacob O’Neal competed in the singles tournament while the duo of Caleb Adcock and Frank Ledezma and the team of Andrew Shepherd and Dakin Christoferson competed for the doubles title.

Both singles players and doubles teams fell in the first round against 2A conference champions Wilkes Central.

Church cruised through the first set against Hunter Jordan, 6-0, but Jordan battled back to tie the match up with a 6-3 win. In the third set tiebreaker, Jordan held on for a 7-6 win.

Krishna Tiwari took down O’Neal in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

In the doubles matches, Daniel Shinaman and Jackson Smith were 6-3, 6-2 winners over Adcock and Ledezma while Parker Jordan and Kevin Reynolds were 6-0, 6-0 winners against Shepherd and Christoferson.

“We had a great learning season. We started out with young or inexperienced players who worked hard, were enthusiastic and developed as the season went by,” said Ashe County Head Coach Larry Dix. “I am very proud of them for the way they represented our school and community.

All six of Ashe’s conference tourney participants made the MVAC All-Conference team.
