It was a close race from the beginning of the 2013-2014 sports season to the very end, but Elkin held on to win the Wells Fargo Conference Cup in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.


Elkin finished the year with 106 points, followed by Wilkes Central in second with 101 and Ashe County in third with 93 points. West Wilkes (91.5), Starmount (74.5), North Wilkes (68), Alleghany (63) and East Wilkes (63) rounded out the MVAC standings.


Elkin was able to secure the championship with a conference title in men’s tennis as well as a second place finish in men’s golf and women’s track and field.


Wilkes Central won the MVAC Championship in baseball and was second in men’s tennis. Ashe won the women’s soccer conference title and placed second in men’s track.


In other area conferences, Avery finished in a tie for third in the Western Highlands 1A/2A conference.


Bishop-McGuinness held off Mount Airy and East Surry for the top spot in the Northwest 1A conference.


In the Western Piedmont 2A, West Stokes won a close battle after taking conference titles in baseball, men’s tennis and women’s soccer to wrap up the spring season. Surry Central finished second, Forbush was third, South Stokes was fourth, North Surry finished fifth and Carver rounded out the conference in sixth.


Finally, Watauga held on to win the Northwestern 3A/4A conference cup. The Pioneers swept both conference crowns in men’s and women’s track as well as men’s tennis. The Pioneers finished with an even 200 points. Hickory (196.5) was second followed by South Caldwell (189) in third and Freedom (180) in fourth. St. Stephens, Fred T. Foard, Patton and Hibriten finished out the eight-team conference.
