Appalachian State University big man Michael Obacha has spent the last six months working hard on a shoe drive to help raise money and bring in donated shoes to send to his home country of Nigeria.

Obacha teamed up with former Davidson player Andrew Lovedale and the Access to Success Foundation to start the Michael Obacha Shoe Drive in January of 2014. Obacha reached out to Mountaineer fans, alumni and community members with the hope of getting 500 pairs of lightly used or new shoes donated as well as $2,500 donated to help with shipping costs.

The Mountaineer family pulled together and blew away Obacha’s initial goal. Over 700 pairs of shoes were donated as well as $4,300 to ship the shoes overseas.

After packing up all the shoes and preparing them for shipment, Obacha headed back home to await the arrival, as well as continue his charity work by giving out basketballs, air pumps and goal nets to those that love the sport overseas.

On June 17, the shoes arrived and Obacha went to work delivering the shoes to places all of his home country that were in need of footwear. Obacha handed out shoes at orphanages, basketball facilities and homeless people doing the best they can to scrape by.

Obacha will continue to work with the Access to Success Foundation.
