Following last weekend’s 2A Midwest Regional wrestling tournament, five Husky grapplers qualified for the 2A state tournament set to be held Thursday night through Saturday night in Greensboro.

The Greensboro Coliseum will be the site for the tournament, which will host matches from 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A classifications, totaling nearly 1,300 matches and crowning 56 individual champions. Overall, over 600 wrestlers will be competing for a title.

Freshman Jake St. Germain qualified for the state tournament after finishing in fourth place at the Midwest Regional in the 112-pound class. St. Germain pinned Thomas Gobble of Central Davidson in 30 seconds, then defeated Micah Phillips of South Stokes by a 17-1 technical fall to put him into the semi-finals. The freshman then lost a hard-fought 7-5 decision to Franklin Phillips of West Davidson. St. Germain enters the state tournament with a 24-7 record and will face the East Regional champion Alex Bray of Croatan High School in the first round.

Michael Elliott will also be competing in the state tournament this weekend after his impressive Midwest Regional victory in the 119-pound class. Elliott pinned Andrew Nelson of South Stokes in 2 minutes, 44 seconds, then took a 1-0 decision win over Cuthbertson’s Cody Walker, who entered the match with a 40-1 record on the season. The freshman then earned his regional championship with a 2-0 decision victory over West Stanly’s Joseph Graves. Elliott (27-7) will enter the state tournament as the number one seed from the Midwest Regional and will face Zach Taylor from Bartlett Yancy in the first round.

The Huskies will have a representative in the 130-pound class as junior Dakota Elliott finished runner-up at the Midwest Regional to claim a spot in the 2A state tournament. Elliott defeated Eric Hasenkopf of Cuthbertson by a 9-0 decision, and then defeated Tanner Allen of West Stanly by a 9-7 decision to earn a spot in the regional championship. Elliott was defeated by sophomore Austin Collins of North Surry by a 7-3 decision, but did well enough to earn the second seed from the Midwest Regional. Elliott (26-6) will face Alex Fisher (22-4) from Pasquotank.

The only senior to represent the Huskies will be 140-pounder Juan Barrientos. The senior defeated West Davidson’s Justin Smith by a 13-3 decision before falling to Starmount’s Ben O’Donnell for a spot in the finals. Barrientos then defeated Steven Bunch from Piedmont High School by a 6-5 decision, and captured third place with his 16-9 decision win over Lexinton’s Ronald Canales. Barrientos (17-3) will be the third seed from the Midwest Regional in the state tournament and will challenge Walter Jenkins (34-9) of the Durham School of the Arts in the first round.

Josh Wineberg will be the final wrestler to represent Ashe County High School in the 2A state tournament. The junior 215-pounder made fast work of all his opponents in the Midwest Regional on the way to the title. Wineberg pinned Patrick Helms of Piedmont in 40 seconds, then pinned Brandon Lawson of South Stokes in 1:45 to earn a spot in the regional championship. Wineberg was quick on the draw again, pinning North Surry’s Zach Creed in 1:14 to lock up the top seed from the regional. Wineberg (25-1) will begin first round action with a match against freshman Adam Kuchta (23-15) of Croatan.

Postseason accolades were also handed out for Ashe as well as the rest of the Mountain Valley Conference teams recently. Wineberg, Zach Hudler, Michael Elliott and Dakota Elliott were all chosen as All-Conference performers while St. Germain, Sherman Gilbert, and William Miller were chosen as honorable mention performers.
