The Ashe County tennis squad split its two matches this week, losing at North Wilkes on Monday before bouncing back to get a home victory over North Wilkes on Tuesday.

Elkin swept all nine matches to remain undefeated in conference play.

“I thought our team played well against a stronger, more experienced team,” said head coach Larry Dix. “This was great experience for our team as they got to play against some of the best players in the conference.”

Elkin’s top seed Tyler Macy is a defending state champion, and showed that by beating Ashe top seed Sam Bowers, 6-0, 6-0.

Elkin won all six of the singles matches by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores. Second seeded Ryan Schell beat Lucas Zeller. David Bullins and Ashton Gant earned wins over Een Shepherd and Jacob O’neal while Chad Vestal and Jacob Lyon were winners against Andrew Shepherd and Jake Harrington.

In doubles matches, Macy and Schell topped Bowers and Zeller, 8-0. Bullins and Vestal beat E. Shepherd and O’neal 8-1 and the duo of Gant and McCulloch beat A. Shepherd and Harrington by an 8-0 score to cap off the sweep.

“They (Ashe) had the opportunity to learn a great deal from this match and I hope they will transfer it to their next matches,” said Coach Dix.

On Tuesday, the Huskies were back on the court battling more chilly temperatures and the other elements of winter weather. This time though, Ashe easily beat its opponent North Wilkes, 9-0.

“It was a very cold and windy day for our guys but they hung in there and got the win,” said Dix. “I think our players were having a difficult time getting in the groove due to the gusty wind factor.”

Ashe’s top seed Bowers made quick work of Patrick Jackson, taking the match in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

Zeller was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Jeffery Piaz while E. Shepherd defeated Scotie Pawelski, 6-0, 6-0.

The fourth and fifth seed matches were won by 6-1, 6-0 scores. O’neal defeated Tristan Williams and A. Shepherd beat John Mullins.

Sixth seeded Harrington won his match by forfeit because North only had five players make the trip up the mountain.

In doubles play, Bowers and Zeller picked up an 8-4 win against Jackson and Piaz while E. Shepherd and O’neal made quick work of Pawelski and Mullins with the 8-0 win. Harrington and Travis Stanley won their doubles match via forfeit.

“We needed this win and this will help our confidence as we go further into the season,” added Coach Dix.

The Huskies are now 3-3 overall and 3-3 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.
