A two vehicle accident about 4 p.m. Saturday in West Jefferson resulted in the death of a two-year-old child and minor injuries to a baby and two adults. The accident took place at the intersection of the Robert G. Barr Expressway, US 221 bypass, and Mt. Jefferson Road. According to Trooper Jason Brown, two-year-old Brayden Roten died from injuries sustained in the accident. He was a passenger in the back seat of a Dodge Neon driven by his mother, 23-year-old Jessica Myers of West Jefferson. Also injured was 10-month-old Zoey Roten, a passenger in the vehicle. Jessica Myers and Zoey Roten were treated and released from Ashe Memorial Hospital. The Neon was struck by a Ford Excursion driven by Allen Cole, 53, of Lansing, who was also treated and released from AMH. Trooper Brown said the Neon was traveling south on the US 221 bypass, attempting to make a left turn onto Mt. Jefferson Road when struck by the Excursion, traveling north on the bypass. The Excursion struck the passenger side of the Neon and overturned, coming to rest on its wheels. Both vehicles came to a stop on the shoulder of the roadway. Both vehicles were totaled. No charges have been filed at this time. The investigation is continuing. Assisting Trooper Brown were Trooper Parunak, Trooper Gammons, and Sgt. Maultsby with the North Carolina Highway Patrol, West Jefferson police officers, local fire departments and emergency rescue personnel.
