With rain changing several schedules last week, the Ashe tennis team entered its hardest match of the year with no practice in four days, but still put up a strong effort against the undefeated East Wilkes Cardinals. East captured a 7-2 win on Wednesday to remain at the top of the Mountain Valley Conference standings.
“The Huskies played a very good team, but could not find the consistency to pull off the victory,” said head coach Larry Dix. “I thought the ladies played better than the score reflected.”
Top seed Anna Wooten dropped her first singles conference match of the year. Kelly Johnson was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over the Ashe senior.
Second seeded Haley Maloney earned the lone singles win of the day, taking a 6-4, 7-6 win over Shanisha White.
East Wilkes’ third seed Hannah Brown was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Kasey Curcio. Molly Callaway captured a 6-3, 6-3 win over fourth seeded Maggie Witherspoon.
In the battle of fifth seeded ladies, Christy Carter took a 6-3, 6-3 win against Hallie Brown, and Marigail Mahaffey gave the Lady Cardinals its fifth win, beating Mary Austin Tugman 6-2, 6-1.
Wooten and Maloney kept their undefeated season going in doubles action with an 8-2 win over White and Brown.
The duo of Johnson and Mahaffey were 8-1 winners over Curcio and Tugman. Callaway and Brown wrapped up the match with an 8-6 triumph over Witherspoon and Brown.
“We will keep working on consistency, ground shots, and net play,” added Coach Dix. “This team has really improved over the season and I think they will keep getting better.”
The Ashe ladies have just one match next week as Elkin will make the trip up the mountain on Tuesday.
