Camp New Hope - usually a warm sanctuary for children - has reported major flooding and is in dire need of help from volunteers.
“As of right now, Camp New Hope is totally cut off; the river has risen so high, it has spilled over into their entry road,” said Vicky Randolph, a volunteer at Camp New Hope. “I’m sure the water will be coming down and there will then be access to fix the road by this weekend.”
According to Randolph, Camp New Hope is looking to recruit help from the community to restore the camp. Randolph said the entrance road has been filled with boulders, rocks, trees and debris. Also, all of the gravel washed away during the storm.
The camp’s few resident volunteers can’t do this job alone, according to Randolph.
Randy Brown, the director of Camp New Hope, said all volunteers will be welcomed to help, especially volunteers that have four wheel drive, ATV, or chainsaws.
“We are under water here at Camp New Hope. If you know of anyone with a tractor and could help with the roads and debris, please call Randy at 336-982-3798 or 336-982-8099,” said Brown in a press release. “We could also use some strong backs and willing able bodies to help move the trash that the flood has washed up onto the grounds.”
According to Brown, Camp New Hope’s buildings have not been damaged. The major problem Camp New Hope faces is the high water levels at the camp’s entrance and a steady stream of debris that has been deposited in the camp.
“We lost the furniture that was down by the river, so please pray about replacing those things also. God is good - the lodge and the house and Mckinley’s Playhouse are still standing and have no damage,” said Brown in the release.
Brown also said several trees have collapsed along the camp’s trails.
With children scheduled to arrive at Camp New Hope in March, Brown said she hoped the camp could be restored in time for their arrival.
