Wilkes Central put up 40 unanswered points and rushed for over 400 yards to hand the Huskies a 47-14 defeat.
The Eagles scored quickly just over a minute into the contest. Alex Dyer finished off Central’s opening drive with a one-yard touchdown run. The extra point put Wilkes Central up 7-0 with 10:28 left in the first quarter.
Ashe let its special teams help put the team on the scoreboard. After forcing an Eagle punt, Carson Knight plowed through the line and blocked the kick. Cullen Ashley recovered the block and returned the ball inside the five-yard line. Fullback Brandon Wingler bulldozed into the end zone for a one-yard touchdown run. Anthony Federico booted the extra point to tie things up at 7-7 with 7:07 left in the quarter.
On Wilkes Central’s next drive, the Eagles fumbled on its own 43-yard line, giving Ashe the ball right back.
Jonathan Cox made the Eagles pay with a 21-yard touchdown run at the 3:53 mark of the first quarter. Federico’s extra point put Ashe in front 14-7.
The Huskies held on to the lead until 8:57 left in the second quarter. Victor Williams crossed the goal line on a three-yard TD run to tie things up at 14.
Central got one more touchdown in the first half to take a 21-14 lead at the break. Cameron Williams capped off a drive with one-yard TD plunge.
In the third quarter, the Eagles took the ball and marched downfield on a drive that took almost nine minutes off the clock. Dyer scored his second touchdown of the day, this one a four-yard run. The point after touchdown was good to make it a 28-14 game.
Things began to unravel in the fourth quarter. Following a Husky fumble, Tyler Wagoner powered across the goal line for a one-yard touchdown run to extend the Wilkes Central lead to 21 points at the 9:52 mark of the fourth quarter.
Following an Ashe punt, V. Williams scampered 72 yards down the sideline for another score. The extra point was blocked, but this one put the game out of reach for Ashe. Williams would find the end zone for a third time on a 14-yard run with 3:42 left in the game to put the final points on the scoreboard.
Cox was one of the few bright spots for the Huskies with 108 rushing yards on 22 carries and a touchdown. Carson Knight got into the game late and got three carries for 18 yards.
Defensively, senior Parker Dunne led all Ashe players with eight tackles. Fellow senior Jake Woods added seven tackles and junior Matthew Hamilton recorded seven tackles as well. Michael Elliott, Cameron Guyton and Alex Laws each had four tackles while Knight, Cox and Ashley added three takedowns.
Victor Williams had a huge day for the Eagles. He only carried the ball eight times, but had 138 yards and three touchdowns. Dyer finished with 75 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns. Cameron Williams was held in check for most of the night by the Huskies as he had only 68 yards on 15 attempts with one touchdown. Wagoner finished with seven carries for 75 yards and a touchdown.
Quarterback Calvin Shomaker ran for 18 yards and completed five of his six passes for 43 yards.
Ashe fell to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference. After the win, Wilkes Central is now 7-1 overall and 6-0 in the MVAC with two games remaining for each team.
The Huskies will host Forbush this Friday while Wilkes Central will travel to Elkin.
In junior varsity action this week, Ashe remained undefeated in conference play with a 14-0 win at home against Wilkes Central. The JV Huskies are now 6-2 overall and 6-0 in the MVAC.
