The cold temperature outside made its way into the Ashe County gym on Tuesday night as both Forbush and Ashe County struggled to shoot the ball all evening long.

Eventually, the Lady Falcons got some shots to fall in the fourth quarter to take a 45-36 victory.

Forbush accounted for the first six points of the game. Brittany Moose scored on two easy layups and Savannah Hill netted a short jump shot that forced a timeout from Ashe at the 3:29 mark of the quarter.

Still seeking its first basket of the game, freshman Ashton Lee buried a three-pointer to get Ashe on the board. Victoria Reed added another three-point basket late in the quarter to make the score 10-6 in favor of Forbush after the first.

The Lady Huskies started the second quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 14-10 lead. Paige Spell scored four, Reed added a layup and Morgan Hudler added a layup.

Both teams traded baskets the rest of the quarter. Ashe got a three-ball from Chelsea Reavis, a jumper and a free throw from Spell and a free throw from Abby Lopp. Forbush got its points on shots from Hill, Moose and Paris Trivette. The Lady Huskies held a slim 21-18 lead at the halftime break.

In the third quarter, neither team could manage many scoring opportunities at all. Ashe was held to just two points, but Forbush could not do much better, scoring only six in the quarter.

Ashe entered the fourth quarter trailing 24-23, but began to lose sight of the lead.

Forbush started hitting shots down the stretch. Moose hit a pair of baskets, Hill added a three-pointer, and Jessica Funk scored her first and only points of the night on a layup inside to help the team pull away down the stretch. Moose, who led all scorers with 18 points, also swished seven consecutive free throws in the final minutes of the fourth.

Hill added 10 points, Trivette finished with six points, and Laken Renegar had five.

For Ashe, the team shot just 27-percent from the field overall, 20-percent from behind the three-point line and 44-percent from the charity stripe.

Spell was Ashe’s high scorer with 13 points. The sophomore also added three rebounds and a pair of steals. Reed finished with five points and three steals, Morgan chipped in four points and five steals and Emily Flanagan had four points and a team-high six rebounds. Lee ended up with three points and four rebounds, Reavis had three points and three assists and Lopp finished with one point and two rebounds.

The Lady Huskies are now 7-9 overall and 5-4 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.

Forbush won its fifth consecutive game, and is now tied with Ashe in the conference standings with a 5-4 mark.

Ashe is scheduled to travel to Starmount on Friday. After that, only five regular season games remain.
