It was a tough tournament for the Ashe County Huskies, dropping both of its games in the 2012 Colvard Oil Holiday Classic.

Avery 52, Ashe 45

The Vikings started the game strong with the first five points of the quarter, forcing an early timeout from Ashe coach Scott Grubb.

The Huskies responded after the timeout with a 7-0 scoring run to take an early lead. Jordan Spell had three points, Anderson Moore had three points and Eli Gambill hit one of two from the free throw line.

Avery closed the quarter with a pair of three-point baskets and Ashe got a short jumper from Moore. The Vikings were up 11-9 after the first.

The two teams continued to trade shots in the second quarter. Ashe tied it up with another basket from Moore. Avery got five points from Payton Lowery and a free throw from Dylan Bauer to take a 17-11 lead.

Ashe then went on an 11-3 scoring spurt to take a brief 22-20 lead. Johnathan Cox scored six points, Seth Sheets added two, Moore chipped in two and Gambill hit a pair of free throws.

Luke Wotell hit a layup and a free throw for Avery in the final seconds to put the Vikings up 23-22 at the half.

Avery extended its lead a bit in the third quarter, pushing its advantage to six points going to the final frame. The Vikings exploded out of the gate in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Huskies 10-1 to put Ashe down 15 points, which proved to be a hole too deep to recover from.

Wotell led Avery with 15 points. Lowery added 11, Chance Watson scored seven and Tre Jackson matched that with seven points.

Cox was the high scorer for Ashe with 13 points and four assists. Moore added nine points and four rebounds, Matthew Lee had six points, and Gambill finished with five points and four rebounds. Spell finished with four points, Devan Sheets had three, Cullen Ashley chipped in three and Seth Sheets had two points. Alex Laws was the leading rebounder, grabbing five boards.

Hibriten 57, Ashe 49

A strong second quarter for Hibriten was the difference in the third place game as the Panthers outscored Ashe 17-5 in the quarter and went on to take a 57-49 victory.

The Huskies were led by a trio of double-digit scorers. Seth Sheets and Spell had 14 points and Cox scored 10. Cox also added nine rebounds, five assists and two steals. Spell added seven rebounds and Sheets chipped in three rebounds and a steal.

Devan Sheets had three points and two steals, Moore had two points and five rebounds, Ashley, Gambill and Lee each scored two points in the loss.

Ashe now has an overall record of 2-8. The Huskies will be on the road for a pair of conference games this week. The team travels to Alleghany on Wednesday and will go to Elkin on Friday.
