Ashe County sent 11 individual athletes and a pair of relay teams to the 2A Midwest Regional track meet at North Stokes High School last weekend.

Five individuals qualified for the state championship meet while three others were part of both relay teams that will be competing this Friday at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro.

Erin Bingham won two different hurdles events. The senior won the 100-meter hurdles in 16.03 seconds and took first in the 300-meter hurdles in 46.86 seconds.

In other track events, Gareth Berry will be running in the men’s 1600-meter event after finishing fourth at regionals with a time of 4:44. The women’s 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams of Aspen Domske, Paige Spell, Amber Hare and Hailey Richardson also qualified for the state meet. The 4x100 team finished in 52.43 seconds, good enough for second place, and the 4x200 team grabbed third place with a time of 1:50.7

The other three state championship qualifiers came in field events. Spell took third in the women’s high jump with a leap of five feet. Madison Little took fourth in the discus throw with a toss of 98 feet, three inches. Finally, Jacob Blevins took the championship in the men’s long jump when his jump measured in at 20 feet, 2.5 inches.

Ashe had several other athletes just miss out on qualifying for the state meet.

Austin Bennett took seventh in the 200-meter dash, seventh in the triple jump and eighth in the long jump. Domske finished fifth in the women’s long jump and seventh in the triple jump. Hare was sixth in the women’s 200-meter dash and seventh in the 400-meter dash. Victoria Reed placed sixth in the mile run and Zach Outen ended up with a ninth place finish in the men’s 300-meter hurdles.

As a team, the women’s squad placed third overall with 50 points and the men’s team placed 11th with 16 points.

The 2A state championship meet is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Friday with field events and 11 a.m. for running events.

"Unfair competition" in N.C. car market

An N.C. Senate bill would prohibit direct marketing to N.C. motorists by Tesla and companies like it. Is this a sound policy?
