An army of fire trucks descended on Badgers Funeral Home to morn the loss of Lansing VFD member Janet Stuart Monday afternoon. Each Ashe County fire department sent a representative to show their support to the Lansing VFD. The trucks then filed out from the funeral home and headed toward Liberty Baptist Church, where Stuart's funeral was being held. First responders at the funeral home said fire fighters and rescue squad members form a very tight-knit community.

The New River Service Authority board announced Thursday that a settlement has been reached with 18 former employees who filed claims against the board for unused vacation pay last year.
