WEST JEFFERSON — The Mountain Valley Conference opener did not go Ashe County’s way on Tuesday with East Wilkes scoring a 9-0 win on the road.
Cardinal top seed Amber Parks defeated Keely Caddell in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Second seeded Riley Wagoner beat Morgan Church, 6-2, 7-5, and third seeded Maddi Lester was a 3-6, 6-3, 10-5 winner over Caroline Current.
In the battle of fourth seeds, Brooke Schubart beat Callie Powell, 6-4, 6-2. Fifth seeded Brie Jarvis defeated Kaylie Fernandez, 6-4, 6-4 and Kari Hodges edged Anna Corley, 7-5, 6-3 in the final singles match.
Parks and Jarvis beat Caddell and Current by an 8-4 score in the first doubles match.
Lester and Abby Reeves added a doubles win for the Cardinals, as did Schubart and Melia Higgins.
Ashe dropped to 0-3 on the season.
“The matches were closer than the score indicated,” said Ashe County head coach Larry Dix. “We lost several close matches and one tiebreaker.”
Next up, the Lady Huskies will take on Watauga at home on Monday. The Pioneers defeated the Huskies 9-0 in Boone last week.
“Our team played hard and I am proud of their effort,” said Coach Dix. “They are young and inexperienced but are getting better with every match.
