HAYS — Ashe County picked up its first win of the season, a 9-0 sweep over North Wilkes in the team’s second conference match of the young season.
“They played the best they have all season with good ground strokes and net play,” said Ashe County head coach Larry Dix.”
Top seed Keely Caddell dominated Laura Phillips as she kept her opponent from winning a single game on the way to a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
Second seed Morgan Church beat Angela Jordan, 6-2, 6-3 and third seed Caroline Church defeated Brooklyn Raye, 6-0, 6-1.
Callie Powell continues to play as Ashe’s fourth seed and reeled off a 6-1, 6-1 win against Chelsea Blevins.
Fifth seed Kaylie Fernandez won easily over Rebekah Day, 6-0, 6-0 and Anna Corley capped off the singles sweep with a 6-0, 6-1 win.
In doubles play, Caddell and Current held off a late charge from Phillips and Raye to get an 8-6 win. Church and Josie Cooper beat Jordan and Mikayla Howell, 8-0 and the tandem of Powell and Fernandez handled Blevins and Jordyn Johnson easily with another 8-0 score.
Ashe is now 1-3 on the season and 1-1 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.
“We still need to work on consistency and unforced errors,” said Coach Dix. “I am proud of our continued development.”
This week, Ashe is scheduled to face Watauga at home (Monday), travel to West Wilkes (Tuesday) and travel to Alleghany (Thursday).
