GERMANY — Former Ashe County Husky and Appalachian State Mountaineer Tommy Spagnolo made his professional basketball debut in Germany.
Spagnolo scored 19 points, grabbed seven rebounds and collected three steals for Elchingen on Sept. 26, a 70-68 win over Weissenhorn.
Spagnolo may be a rookie and still adapting to life in Germany, but that did not stop him from earning the starting spot at power forward.
The Ashe native played 28 minutes and hit 4-of-8 shots from the field including a three-pointer. Spagnolo also had a good night at the charity stripe, hitting 8-of-12 free throws.
Teammate Justin Martin (Southern Methodist University) led all scorers with 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor.
For Weissenhorn, Nils Mittmann scored 17 points, Joschka Ferner scored 15 and Christopher Anderson (San Diego University) scored 13 points, dished out five assists and had a game-high five steals.
Spagnolo’s team will be back on the hardwood on each of the next two Saturdays. Elchingen faces Wuerzburg on Oct. 3 and Karisruhe on Oct. 10.
