WEST JEFFERSON — Ashe County scored 10 unanswered goals to hand Alleghany a 10-1 loss in 59 minutes of play after the mercy rule was brought on by the nine-goal lead.
It was Alleghany that scored first in the sixth minute against an Ashe team playing without its top three scorers in Victor Melo, Erik Barcenas and Kendall Wagner.
The Huskies tied the score at 1-1 in the 13th minute off of a penalty kick goal from Josh Brettschneider. Caleb Key earned the PK by drawing a foul inside the scoring box on a slide tackle.
Ashe took its first lead in the 27th minute off of the foot of Shawn McKiddy.
Freshman Alec Roland added a goal in the 30th minute to put the Huskies ahead, 3-1.
Ashe added three more goals in the final nine minutes of play. Ozzy Barcenas connected on a terrific header goal off of a corner kick in the 31st minute. Rolando Olvera chipped in a nice kick in the 35th minute and with 37 seconds left, Barcenas scored another header off of a corner kick to give Ashe a 6-1 halftime advantage.
The Huskies scored four goals in the second half, including the third of the night from Barcenas, a goal from Mason Calloway and the first goal of the season for Ezequial Mendoza.
Sophomore Daniel Lipscomb has continued his stellar play in net after taking over the starting job earlier in the season.
The Huskies improved to 10-5 overall and 6-1 in the MVAC. This marked Ashe’s sixth consecutive win.
Alleghany fell to 0-8 overall and 0-6 in the MVAC
