WEST JEFFERSON — Despite a pouring rain that set in around halftime, the Husky offense stayed on fire.
Ashe scored at least five touchdowns in a game for the fourth straight contest, turning this offensive performance into a 37-13 win against West Wilkes.
Junior halfback Skye Sullivan put the Huskies up early with a 6-yard TD run with 9:24 left in the first.
West Wilkes countered with some nice running of its own. Chandler Caudill tied the game up at 7-7 with a 17-yard TD with a little over three minutes remaining in the quarter.
The Blackhawks took a brief lead with two minutes left in the quarter when Caudill ripped off a 48-yarder for the score and a 13-7 lead.
West Wilkes kept the momentum on its wide with an interception by Alex Ortiz on Ashe’s first play after the kickoff.
Ashe got the ball back after forcing a quick punt, but then the turnover bug bit again. JC Dickson picked off Colin Ellis at the 11:21 mark of the second quarter.
Just as the rain was starting to fall, the Huskies put a game-tying drive together with 4:25 left in the first half. Sullivan crashed across the goal line from one yard out, but the extra point was missed.
The Huskies kept the offense moving on two more possessions in the half.
Ellis found Maison McNeill streaking across the field for a 50-yard TD reception and a 20-13.
On the final play of the half, Kendall Richardson nailed a 36-yard field goal in the pouring rain to put Ashe in front, 23-13 at the half.
Ashe opened the third quarter with Sullivan’s third TD of the night, a 6-yard run with 9:46 left on the clock.
The rain never let up, slowing the game down on both sides. Ashe was able to add one more score to cap off the team’s fourth win in a row.
Ashe is now 4-3 overall and 3-0 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.
West Wilkes fell to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in the MVAC.
Next up, Ashe travels to East Wilkes to face the only other undefeated team in the MVAC. The Cardinals are 7-0 and 3-0 in the MVAC after another convincing victory, this one over Elkin, 55-0.
