HAYS — The Ashe County Huskies will look to get back to its winning ways on Friday night with the final conference road game of the season at North Wilkes.

Ashe (4-4, 3-1 MVAC) suffered a disappointing 31-28 defeat on the road to East Wilkes last week. The Huskies let a late lead slip away on a touchdown pass with just over two minutes left to suffer the team’s first conference loss of the season.

For North Wilkes (1-7, 0-4 MVAC) it has been a tough season from the outset. The Vikings got its lone win in the second week of the season at South Stokes, a 33-21 win.

After that, it has been a mixture of blowout losses and heartbreaking defeats. North Wilkes lost to Forbush by a single point and to Alleghany by five points. Avery County easily beat North, 31-14 and most recently, Starmount blasted the Vikings, 54-13. The Rams scored 40 second-half points to turn a close game into a blowout.

North Wilkes is led by senior quarterback Dylan Bauguess. Bauguess passed for a score and ran for one more, accounting for both of the scores against Starmount last week.

At the skill positions, wideout Daniel Pruitt and starting running back Jarrett Grimes will be the focal point for the Viking offense. Grimes ran for 72 yards last week and Pruitt caught a touchdown.

Overall, Ashe has dominated the series against North Wilkes, losing just three times since Ashe County High School opened in 1998. Ashe lost to the Vikings in 1998, 2002 and 2012.

Kickoff from Raner Wiles Stadium will be at 7:30 p.m.
