WEST JEFFERSON — The biggest game of the season for the Huskies will take place at Ashe County High School this Friday night against the visiting Starmount Rams.
A win for the Huskies not only keeps them alive for at least a share of the conference championship, but it also keeps them in control of their own destiny for the top 2A playoff seed from the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference. With that comes at least one guaranteed home playoff game.
Ashe (5-4, 4-1 MVAC) is coming off of an impressive 43-0 win over North Wilkes while Starmount (5-4, 3-2 MVAC) is coming off of a hard-fought loss to East Wilkes, 28-21. This was the first time Starmount had ever lost at home to East Wilkes.
The Rams are led by a pair of seniors in quarterback Andrew Smythers and running back Brandon Prescott. Smythers accounted for two scores in last week’s game against the Cardinals.
Much like the Huskies, Starmount tackled a strong non-conference schedule to prepare themselves for the MVAC slate of games. The Rams started the season with back-to-back losses at Mount Airy (14-2) and at East Surry (41-21). After that, the Rams finished strong with a 35-15 win at Forbush and a 14-13 win at home against Thomasville.
Starmount started the MVAC schedule with a 48-7 win in the rivalry with Elkin and a 47-7 win against West Wilkes.
Next up, the Rams were dealt a big loss by Wilkes Central on the road by a 41-14 score before bouncing back to beat North Wilkes, 54-13.
Ashe will end the regular season at home next week against Elkin while Starmount will be at home against Alleghany.
* Ashe County hasn’t beaten Starmount since 2007, a 24-21 win on the road.
* The Rams lead the overall series, 8-2.
* Colin Ellis has now passed for over 2,000 yards this season.
* The Rams have won or shared the MVAC Championship in six of the last seven years.
* A Starmount win guarantees a winning record for the eighth straight season.
