WEST JEFFERSON — Ashe trailed by just three points going to the fourth, but a hot-shooting West Caldwell team came to life in the final eight minutes to pull away for an 80-64 win over the Huskies in the first round of the Colvard Oil Holiday Classic.
Sophomore guard Trevon Hall led all players with 24 points. Dashawn Francis scored 15, Titus Tucker had 14 and Fred Patterson finished with 10 points.
The Huskies had three players reach double-figure scoring. Junior Malachi Poe had 18 points that included hitting 5-of-9 from three-point range. Kendall Richardson scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Judd Price scored 10 points, grabbed seven boards and dished out six assists.
Dante Shuler finished with six points, Colin Ellis had four and Noah Blevins scored three. Tristen Jones scored two points but had a strong game on the glass with 14 rebounds. Dylan Little and Grant Thompson rounded out the Husky scoring totals with two points apiece.
West Caldwell forced 18 Ashe turnovers and held the Huskies to 35-percent shooting from the floor.
The Warriors are now 7-3 overall while the Huskies dropped to 4-6.
Ashe will host North Wilkes on Jan. 5 and hit the road to East Wilkes on Jan. 8. The Huskies are 3-0 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.
