WEST JEFFERSON — A scrappy Lady Husky squad played the unbeaten North Wilkes Vikings tough, but in the end, North Wilkes had just a little too much defense and shooting prowess to knock off Ashe, 41-32
The Lady Vikings moved to 12-0 overall and 3-0 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference and are currently ranked as the second best 2A team in the state according to MaxPreps.
Forward Emily Phillips led all scorers with 18 points while Jennifer Rhodes added seven points for the Vikings.
The Lady Huskies had a pair of double-figure scorers on the night. Freshman Samantha Woods was the high scorer with 12 points and junior point guard Chloe Sullivan added 11. Madison Osborne chipped in three points, Jayce Miller added two, Abby Sullivan scored two, Savannah Brooks hit one free throw as did Sydney Kate Grubb.
Ashe dropped to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in the MVAC.
It would be Ashe that held the early lead, taking an 11-10 advantage after the first quarter.
North Wilkes answered back to hold Ashe to six points in the second quarter and turned a one-point deficit into a 21-16 halftime lead. The Vikings opened the quarter on a 10-0 run, but then Ashe answered back with a 5-0 spurt itself to keep the game close.
In the third, both teams went back and forth, but North finished out the quarter adding on to its lead, building a 33-23 advantage going to the fourth.
Ashe made three shots from three-point land in the fourth, getting one from Osborne, Woods and Sullivan, but North was able to hit 4-of-6 free throws late and got a pair of clutch baskets from Phillips to secure the win.
Next up for the Lady Huskies is a trip to East Wilkes on Friday. The Cardinals are currently 3-0 in the MVAC with wins over West Wilkes, Wilkes Central and Starmount.
North Wilkes will meet Elkin on Friday with both teams holding a perfect 12-0 record.
