WEST JEFFERSON — North Wilkes rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to upset the Huskies and give the home team its first loss in conference play, 52-51.
Ashe built a 27-19 lead at the half, but the Vikings came to work on defense in the third quarter, using a 2-3 zone to fluster the Husky shooters. The Vikings outscored Ashe in the third period, 20-9 to take a three-point lead going to the fourth.
The Huskies kept it close throughout and just when it looked like North Wilkes was going to pull away at the end, Ashe was kept in the game by a technical foul called on Dylan Bauguess. After a three-point basket got Ashe to within a point, Bauguess was fouled and appeared to throw an elbow after the foul and got the technical foul.
Bauguess hit 1-of-2 from the line, leaving the door open for the Huskies to tie it up.
Malachi Poe buried the first free throw, but came up short on the second one. The Vikings held a one-point lead at 52-51 with two seconds left.
The Huskies had a shot to win it at the buzzer but a floater from Judd Price rolled off the rim.
Ashe fell to 5-7 overall and 3-1 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.
North Wilkes improved to 6-6 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
Jordan Wallis led all scorers with 16 points. Daniel Pruitt added 14 points and Bauguess scored 10.
Price was the high man for the Huskies with 13 points. Poe finished with 10 points and Kendall Richardson added 10 points to go with five boards.
