WARRENSVILLE —With only three regular season matches remaining, the Ashe County Middle School wrestling team is gearing up for the conference championship and state championship tournaments coming up in the next month.

The Bulldogs beat North Wilkes on Wednesday by a 66-36 score but suffered its first loss of the year at West Wilkes on Friday by a 61-38 score.

“It was a good match, I just hate losing any of them,” said ACMS head coach Alex Wray. “Everybody did good, it’s a setback, but it’s also a setup for a comeback.”

Ashe will travel to Central Wilkes on Tuesday and Starmount on Wednesday before ending the regular season at home on Friday against Central Wilkes.

After that, the focus is on the big prize with a conference championship on the line in the conference tournament at Central Wilkes on Saturday, Jan. 23.

“We’re still on track, we have to just keep pushing and keep believing in what we are doing,” said Coach Wray.”

Wray said that he will have to rest a few of his top guys that are battling some nagging injuries to get them ready for the conference tourney and state championship tournament coming up as well.

Fans are encouraged to come out and attend the final home match on Friday to pack the gym and support the great season that the Bulldog wrestling team is having. Matches are slated to start at 4:30 p.m.
