WEST JEFFERSON — The junior varsity boys capped off the season with a 55-44 win over West Wilkes and capturing the 2015-16 Mountain Valley Athletic Conference Championship.
Ashe had a big first quarter to take a 17-5 lead over the Blackhawks. Each time West Wilkes tried to rally back, the Huskies found a way to make some key shots and keep the lead the rest of the way.
Alec Roland led all scorers with 19 points. Luke Hudler added 11 points and Ethan Cox scored 10, including a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Branson Shepherd added eight points, Brian Zheng scored three, Jake Richardson added two and Noah Vannoy scored two.
For the Blackhawks, Alex Ortiz was the high scorer with 15 and Dalton Blankenship scored 11.
The Huskies finished the year with a record of 19-3 overall and 12-1 in the MVAC. The team’s only conference loss came on a buzzer beater against North Wilkes.
The season started on a high note for the team, winning the Dr. Pepper/Triangle Vending JV Invitational Tournament at the high school. The wins kept piling up, even after a mid-season coaching change saw assistant coach Darwin Wolfe take over the reigns as the head coach and two players making the move up to the varsity squad, sophomores Caleb Key and Jarod Carlton.
Following a pair of setbacks in early January to North Wilkes and Avery County, Ashe ended the season on an eight-game winning streak.
