Grapplers compete in regional

WALNUT COVE — Six Ashe County High School wrestlers traveled to South Stokes High School for the NCHSAA 2A Midwest Regional.

In the 106-pound class, senior Caleb Cooper suffered two defeats. Lexington’s Marc Anderson pinned Cooper in 1:12 in the first round. In the consolation round, Tyler Jordan of Wilkes Central was able to pin Cooper at the 4:13 mark of the match.

Next up, 120-pounder Tate Miller was pinned in 28 seconds by Jake Morin, representing the Central Academy of Technology and Arts. Miller’s tournament came to a close in the first consolation match, a pinfall loss to West Stokes’ Victor Moore in 31 seconds.

Ashe’s first win of the day came at 132 pounds for Brady Buchanan. He pinned North Rowan’s Brandon Myers in 1:15 to advance to the quarterfinals. John Kevin Fischer from South Stokes was able to pin Buchanan in at the 2:26 mark of the match.

In the consolation rounds, Buchanan scored a 5-2 decision win over Mount Pleasant’s Mackay Burke before being pinned by West Stanly’s Jared Watson in 1:38.

In the opening round of the 138-pound division, Tyrese Murphy from Carver was able to escape with an 8-6 decision win over Ashe’s Harley Miller.

Miller bounced back to pin West Stanly’s Sam Hinson in 4:30 in the first consolation match. After that, Monroe’s Travon Clark pinned Miller in 2:45 to end his tournament run.

The final two weight classes that Ashe participated in were 152 and 182 pounds.

John Reavis was dealt an early blow in his first round match, a 20-7 major decision loss to East Davidson’s Brandon Perrell.

Reavis pinned Marco Silva of Monroe in 52 seconds to notch one win in the consolation round. Carver’s Quentin Horne beat Reavis by a 10-2 major decision in the second round of consolation matches.

The final Husky wrestler at the regional was Jake Shepherd. The 182-pounder pinned Ryan Mauck of North Surry in 31 seconds to score an opening-round win.

In the quarterfinals, Michael Franklin of Parkwood pinned Shepherd in 48 seconds to advance to the semifinals.

Shepherd got a consolation win over North Rowan’s Darren Williams with a pinfall victory in 4:20. Lexington’s Dylan Tucker pinned Shepherd in the third round of consolation matches.

The state championship tournament is set for this weekend in Greensboro.
