WEST JEFFERSON — Three Ashe County basketball players were named to the Mountain Valley All-Conference team last week.

Juniors Dante Shuler and Judd Price represented the varsity men while freshman Samantha Woods was the lone Lady Husky on the award list.

Shuler averaged nearly 13 points per game to go along with six rebounds and two steals per contest. Price was also just short of averaging 13 points per game with three rebounds, two assists and two steals per contest. Those two were key players in helping lead Ashe County to a third place finish in the MVAC.

Woods had an impressive freshman campaign, averaging 12 points, five rebounds and three steals a game.

The Lady Huskies had two players receive honorable mention recognition for their play this season. Sydney Kate Grubb and Chloe Sullivan represented Ashe on that list.

For the men, the team’s lone senior, Kendall Richardson, received honorable mention recognition as well as junior Malachi Poe.

Co-conference champs Starmount and North Wilkes also shared the top two postseason honors on the men’s side. Starmount’s Kyler Gregory was named MVAC Player of the Year while North Wilkes head coach Marty Behrens was named MVAC Coach of the Year. Behrens took over a winless North Wilkes squad that finished 0-23 last season and took them to 17-10 record, a conference title and a first round playoff victory.

For the women, Elkin and North Wilkes shared the MVAC championship but it would be Elkin that swept both of the top awards. Lady Elks head coach Derek Carter was named MVAC Coach of the Year and Miracle Walters was named MVAC Player of the Year. Elkin finished the regular season with a 23-3 overall record and are still alive in the 1A state playoffs.
