Husky sports: Track team competes at Bunker Hill

CLAREMONT — Ashe County traveled to Bunker Hill on Wednesday for the team’s third track meet of the young season.

The Huskies picked up wins in three events. Luis Ramos was the class of the field in the men’s discus. His throw of 126 feet, six inches was nearly 12 feet better than second place Ty Smith of Lincolnton. The other victory came in the women’s 3200-meter run where Margot Mattix won the race in 13:29, six seconds ahead of second place Caroline Hilliard from Bunker Hill.

Ashe’s final win came in the women’s high jump where freshman Holly Grant had a leap of four feet, six inches.

Ashe had several other solid performances throughout the meet.

In the field, Tyler Church grabbed third in the pole vault, clearing eight feet. Sam Hudler had a good showing in the men’s high jump with a second place leap of five feet, 10 inches.

Senior Savannah Brooks placed fifth in the women’s shot put with a toss of 25 feet, five inches. Alex Richardson took third on the men’s side with a throw measuring in at 41 feet, six inches while Ramos was fifth with a throw of 40 feet, 2.5 inches.

In the women’s long jump, Savannah Cary took fourth with a leap of 13 feet, nine inches.

The Huskies continued to find success in the long distance running events, led by senior Andrew Tedder who was second in the men’s 3200-meter run, crossing the line in 10:26, and third in the 1600-meter run, finishing in 4:47. In the women’s 1600, Mattix placed third and freshman Madison Warner was fourth with 11 seconds between them.

Cary placed second in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing the course in 18.3 seconds. Terek Ashley took fifth in both the men’s 110 and 300-meter hurdles.

Women’s 100-meter dash: Kaitlyn Jordan (sixth), Maddie Joines (10th).

Men’s 100-meter dash: Matthew Greer (seventh), Hunter Argetsinger (10th).

Women’s 200-meter dash: Kaitlyn Jordan (sixth), Brooklyn Roten (eight), Spencer Simino (10th).

Men’s 200-meter dash: Matthew Greer (eighth).

Women’s 400-meter dash: Spencer Simino (third).

Men’s 400-meter dash: Sam Hudler (fourth), Riley Richardson (seventh).

Women’s 800-meter run: Madison Warner (third), Constance Mattix (eighth), Olivia Randolph (ninth).

Men’s 800-meter run: Terek Ashley (fifth), Billy Reyna (10th).

Men’s tennis

HAYS — The Huskies scored its first win of the season, a 9-0 triumph over North Wilkes in the team’s second Mountain Valley Athletic Conference game.

“North Wilkes was a much improved team from last year and there were some close matches but the ball fell our way,” said Ashe County head coach Larry Dix. “This was a good road win for us and it gave us more court time and experience. I am proud of the effort of the team.”

Ashe (1-2) has a busy week ahead with three matches. Ashe played host to Avery County on Monday and will go West Wilkes on Wednesday and Alleghany on Thursday.


LENOIR — The Lady Husky varsity softball squad split its two games opening the 2016 season.

Ashe came away with an 8-7 victory over Avery County at home before suffering a 10-0 setback at Hibriten most recently.

The Huskies (1-1) go to Starmount on Tuesday to open conference play and then travel to Wilkes Central on Friday.
