COLUMBUS — The 45th annual Times-News Invitational at Polk County High School was the site of a pair of new Ashe County High School long distance records.

According to head coach Alex Rollins, Andrew Tedder broke a four-year-old record held by Glen Bailey in the men’s 1600-meter run. Tedder’s time of 4:41 set the new mark and was good enough for a fifth place finish overall.

For the women, Margot Mattix broke an even longer record, one that has stood since 2005. Mattix’s time of 12:37 in the 3200-meter run broke Ashton Little’s record that stood for 10 seasons. Mattix finished fourth in the race.

Ashe County was one of 22 high schools represented at the event, one of the longest-running annual track meets in North Carolina.

The top finish of the day went to senior Alex Richardson. His toss of 43 feet, eight inches in the shot put was good enough to win the event. Richardson also placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 111 feet, 7.5 inches.

Nic Lanfranchi cruised to a second place finish in the men’s 110-meter hurdles, finishing in 16.38 seconds.

In the men’s high jump, Sam Hudler placed sixth with a leap of five feet, six inches. Hudler also ran strong in the 200 and 400-meter dashes, taking sixth in the 200 and fifth in the 400.

Savannah Cary placed sixth overall in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 18.3 seconds. Bella Potter took fifth in the women’s high jump, clearing four feet, six inches and followed that up with an 11th place run in the 300-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 61.05 seconds.

In the women’s pole vault, Jada Nichols finished third and Chloe Sullivan ended up in seventh.
