WILKESBORO — In a battle of the top 2A teams in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference, Wilkes Central came away with an 8-1 victory over the Huskies on Tuesday.
“Wilkes Central is a good team and have only lost to conference leader Elkin and East Wilkes,” said Ashe County head coach Larry Dix. “Our young men played hard and won some games, but our team made more errors than Wilkes Central.”
Jacob Key played as the top seed for Ashe and was defeated by Hunter Jordan in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. In the second seeded matchup, Dakota Massucco earned a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ashe’s Andrew Shepherd.
Wilkes Central’s Mac Garrett had a strong match against Simon Houck, winning by a 6-0, 6-0 score.
Ashe got a victory in the fourth seeded match. Dakin Christoferson won the first set, 7-5 and then cruised to a 6-1 win in the second set to win the match over John Frazier.
The fifth seeded match was a close one all the way to the end. Wilkes Central’s Nick Johnson won the first set, 7-5 but then Ashe’s Devin Rupard battled back to take the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6. In the third and final set, Johnson held on for a 10-7 tiebreak win.
The final singles match went to Wilkes Central by a 6-0, 6-0 score with Daniel Virmont beating Carter Wilson.
All three doubles matches went into the books as Eagle victories. Jordan and Massucco were 8-1 winners over Key and Shepherd. Garrett and Frazier held on for an 8-4 win over Houck and Rupard and finally Johnson and Virmont beat Christoferson and Wilson by an 8-2 score.
The Huskies are 4-6 overall and 3-4 in the MVAC.
With this match, Ashe has finished the first half of the conference season.
“Playing these stronger teams is great experience for our developing team,” said Coach Dix. “We are still struggling with consistency, court position and confidence. Hopefully as we move into the second half of the season, we will see more balls falling our way and our young men keeping more balls in play.”
Next week, Ashe has a pair of home matches on the schedule. The Huskies will host North Wilkes on Tuesday and West Wilkes on Thursday. Ashe won the previous matches against both teams on the road.
