WEST JEFFERSON — The Ashe County men’s track team picked up another victory, tallying 98.5 points and winning seven events last Wednesday.
Hunter Argetsinger took first in the pole vault, clearing eight feet, six inches. Teammate Tyler Church finished second, clearing eight feet even.
Ashe continued its success in the field with Alex Richardson winning the discus with a throw of 107 feet, four inches and winning the shot put with a toss of 38 feet, seven inches.
The men also captured wins in the 4×800 and 4×200 relays on the track.
Victor Melo took home first place in the 400-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 54.1 seconds, a full four seconds ahead of Elkin’s Chris Lomax.
The final victory for the men came in the 800-meter where Andrew Tedder and Terek Ashley took first and second place. Tedder’s finishing time of 2:07 was eight seconds in front of Ashley.
For the women, Ashe placed third, but did score more points in the sprint events than Starmount, Alleghany or Elkin.
Brooklyn Roten won the 400-meter dash in 1:13. Teammate Shanna Huffman finished in third place. Kaitlyn Jordan was able to edge out Alleghany’s Katelyn Davis in the 200-meter dash, crossing the line in 29.3 seconds.
In the longer distance events, Constance Mattix took second in the 800-meter run, finishing in 3:24. Madison Warner won the men’s mile run, easily winning by well over a minute. Her time of 6:06 beat out Starmount’s Faith Brewer who finished in 7:29.
