WEST JEFFERSON — Ashe County earned its 10th victory of the season on Friday evening and remained undefeated in conference play with a 3-0 win over East Wilkes.

Emma Calloway got the Lady Huskies on the board first with a nice shot off of a pass from Melissa Ramos in the 12th minute.

Ashe pushed its advantage to a two-goal lead 15 minutes later when Valerie Keys fired a shot into the back of the net.

The final 13 minutes of the first half were fairly uneventful for both teams with Ashe holding a 2-0 lead at the halftime break.

The second half started with a quick corner kick chance for Ashe in the 43rd minute that was a well placed ball from Keys, but the Cardinal defense was able to clear the ball out of harm’s way.

In the 51st minute, a foul was called against East Wilkes, setting up a free kick shot for Ashe. Senior Bekah Bowers had a perfectly placed shot that cleared the goalkeeper’s hands and sailed just under the crossbar for a great goal and a 3-0 lead.

Ashe kept trying to build on the lead the rest of the way.

Ramos and Calloway both had good shots stopped in the 55th and 62nd minutes.

In the 64th minute, an Ashe County corner kick almost resulted in a goal off of a header from Mahala Land, but the Cardinal keeper was there for the save.

Savannah Brooks had a shot get stopped in the 77th minute and a final corner kick opportunity in the 78th minute was cleared away by the Cardinals.

The only real scoring threat East Wilkes had in the second half was a corner kick with four minutes left in the game. The kick went towards the far post but no one was there to put a shot on goal.

Ashe County improved to 10-5 overall and 8-0 in the MVAC.

The Huskies will go to North Wilkes on Tuesday before hosting Forbush in a big non-conference battle against the Falcons on Thursday. The Falcons are unbeaten this year at 15-0-1 and are currently ranked as the top 2A team in the state.

Ashe will finish the week at West Wilkes on Friday.
