Wagner qualifies for 2A Regional

ROARING GAP — Ashe County senior Kendall Wagner earned himself a spot in the 2A Midwest Regional next week after his performance in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday.

Wagner finished with a score of 84, the top Husky score of the afternoon.

Corey Carter finished with a 92, Ben Brooks shot 99, Brad Colvard finished with a score of 101 and Connor Jones finished with a 111.

Wilkes Central wrapped up an outstanding season with the MVAC Tournament Championship and regular season championship, winning by 14 shots over second place Alleghany in the tourney and 58 shots in the season as a whole. Starmount and North Wilkes tied for third, followed by West Wilkes, Elkin, East Wilkes and Ashe County.

Central teammates Chandler Metz and Zach Caudill finished in a tie for first place. Both shot a 73 for the win. Metz captured the MVAC Player of the Year honors.

Quinton Metz, Spencer Hayes and Jack McLean will also join those two in the regional tournament representing Wilkes Central.

West Wilkes will send its entire team to the regional as well after beating North Wilkes by two shots in the season-long score total. Andrew Cheek, Andrew Johnson, Gavin Blankenship, Joseph Newton and Jordan Minton will represent the Blackhawks.

North Wilkes will have three golfers heading to regional play. Dillon Brown, Dalton Jessup and Troy Gibson will be competing in Mount Airy next week.
