Appalachian Rollergirls hit the track
BOONE — The Appalachian Rollergirls will be furiously skating to take down its opponent on Sunday at the Holmes Convocation Center. The Rollergirls take on the Dominion Derby Girls from Virginia at 2 p.m.
Following that matchup, the Rollergirls “B-Team” known as the Booneshiners, will skate against the Mayhem Maydens from Haywood County.
Doors open at 1 p.m. for the team’s first home match of the season.
“Both teams from our league have been improving their defensive walls and offensive strategies,” said skater Rolli Cannoli. “We can’t wait to show these teams how our perseverance and hard work is going to pay off. We never tire.”
The Rollergirls use these matches to “encourage female athleticism, empowerment and community awareness.”
All of the money raised in this match will go to the F.A.R.M. Café. The café has a staff made up almost entirely of volunteers and do their best to feed everyone in the community, whether they can afford it or not. Patrons can work an hour in the café in exchange for a meal
Advanced tickets are available at Lucky Penny, Piedmont Federal Saving Bank, F.A.R.M. Café and the Holmes Center Box Office. Ticket prices are $12 for adults and $8 for students. At the door ticket prices are $15 for an adult and $10 for a student with a valid college ID. Children 10-years-old and younger will receive free admission.
Lady Huskies blank West Wilkes, 8-0
MILLERS CREEK — The Lady Huskies remained unbeaten in Mountain Valley Athletic Conference play, defeating the Blackhawks by an 8-0 score on Friday.
West Wilkes had to play without leading scorer and reigning MVAC Player of the Year, Cassie Burdiss.
Ashe held a 4-0 lead at the halftime break and added four more goals in the second half.
Alyssa Peterson and Caroline Current both scored twice while Bekah Bowers, Sam Woods, Emma Calloway and Gracie Green each scored one in the victory.
On Tuesday, the Lady Huskies easily handled Alleghany by a 10-1 score.
Ashe is now 13-6 overall and 11-0 in the MVAC.
The Lady Huskies will return home for the final regular season home match against Elkin on Friday. Ashe’s seniors will be honored prior to the contest.
