JEFFERSON — It will be a busy summer for Ashe County Parks and Recreation.
The county will be hosting the Tarheel League District 2 softball tournament on June 27, which will feature teams from Ashe, Alleghany, Watauga, Wilkes and Catawba County.
The schedule remains jam packed on the diamond in July when Ashe will also host four different state championship tournaments.
Beginning on July 20, the 8U coach pitch, 8U machine pitch and 14U softball tournaments will take place in the county across six different fields at Family Central, Ashe Park and the softball field at Ashe County High School.
The following week, the Minor League Boys Championship for the 10U league will also be played in the county.
Both state tournaments will feature 16 of the top teams in each league and Ashe will have at least one team in all four of the state tourneys.
“One of the things about hosting the state tournament is that you automatically get to send a team to the tournament from your home league,” said Ashe County Parks and Recreation Director, Scott Turnmyre.
Building up to the softball tournament, the ACPR staff will be busy getting the fields ready to play. Tarheel League requirements state that the tournament host has to have six fields playable for the tournament.
“We will be using the All-Star field here at the park, the three fields at Family Central and we’re also going to start some work on the lower field which was originally the Ashe Central baseball field,” said Turnmyre.
There is currently a movable fence at the lower fields at Ashe Park that can be moved to the field at Family Central to provide a fencing and add a fourth field at Family Central.
According to Turnmyre, they will also be adding some dugouts and a scoreboard as well.
The sixth field to be used will be the softball field at the high school.
“We’ll have all six of those fields going at one time. A lot of people will come into the county from all over the state,” Turnmyre added.
A tournament schedule for the week will be available at a later date.
