Ashe takes fourth in Wells Fargo Conference Cup

WEST JEFFERSON — After winning the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference Championship in women’s soccer and both men’s and women’s track, Ashe was able to secure a fourth place finish in the Wells Fargo Conference Cup standings.

Wilkes Central finished first with 106 points, followed by East Wilkes with 97, Elkin with 92.5 and Ashe with 90.5. West Wilkes was fifth with 87 points, Starmount placed sixth with 82.5 points, North Wilkes was seventh with 67 points and Alleghany was eighth with 58.5 points.

Central took home the titles in men’s golf and baseball as well as runner-up finishes in women’s soccer and women’s track. East Wilkes finished runner-up in men’s tennis while Elkin captured the conference title in men’s tennis.

In other area conferences, Avery County finished second in the Western Highlands 1A/2A with 173 points, a total of 24 points behind Hendersonville.

Watauga also had a runner-up finish in the Northwestern Athletic 3A/4A. Hickory took first with 216 points, just ahead of Watauga’s total of 205. Hibriten was seventh in the conference with 156.5 points.

Each year, the Wells Fargo Conference Cup is awarded to the top finishing team in each conference in the state with point totals awarded to each school for how well they finish in each sport throughout the fall, winter and spring seasons.
