BOONE — Appalachian State senior tailback Marcus Cox was named to the Maxwell Award watch list for the upcoming season.

The Maxwell Award is given to the nation’s collegiate player of the year and has been handed out each year since 1937. Cox is one of 91 Football Bowl Subdivision athletes on the preseason list.

Cox has been one of the best running backs in App State history and has one more year to add onto an already-impressive legacy.

Last season, Cox finished 17th in the nation in total rushing yards with 1,423 and ran for at least 100 yards in eight of the team’s 12 games.

Cox finished last season in style with 24 carries for 162 yards in the Mountaineers’ first ever bowl victory.

Overall, Cox is the only player in Mountaineer history to ever run for at least 1,000 yards in each of his first three seasons. Cox also joins former Mountaineer star John Settle as the only App State players to average at least 100 rushing yards per game.

The Mountaineers will open the 2016 season on the road at the University of Tennessee on Sept. 1
