WEST JEFFERSON — East Wilkes secured wins in all but one match on Tuesday evening, defeating the Lady Huskies by an 8-1 score.
Cardinal top seed Maddi Lester beat Caroline Current in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.
Ashe got its lone win of the evening in the battle of second seeded players with Morgan Church beating Kari Hodges, 6-2, 6-3.
In the third seeded match, Brie Jarvis was a 6-0, 6-2 winner against Ashe County’s Anna Corley.
Abby Reeves beat Kaylie Fernandez in the fourth seeded match, 6-3, 6-3 and fifth seeded Kinsey Crabb beat MacKenzie Woods, 6-1, 6-3.
In the sixth seeded match, it all came down to a third set tiebreaker. Leah Nance beat Ashe’s Amber Miller by a 6-1 score in the first set. Miller battled back and beat Nance by a 6-3 margin in the second set. The tiebreaker went to Nance, 10-6, to win the match.
East Wilkes swept all three doubles matches by scores of 8-0, 8-4 and 8-4.
“East Wilkes always brings a strong team,” said Ashe County head coach Larry Dix. “We need more court time in order to get more consistent.”
Ashe dropped to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.
East Wilkes is 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the MVAC.
The Lady Huskies close out this week of action at home against North Wilkes on Thursday.
