Volleyball scores first victory

NEWLAND — The varsity volleyball team took down Avery County in five sets last Thursday, picking up the team’s first win of the young season.

Ashe won the first set by a 26-24 score before Avery stormed back to take the second set, 25-14.

In the third set, Ashe escaped with a 29-27 victory.

With the match on the line, Avery was able to force a fifth and deciding set after beating Ashe in the fourth set, 25-16.

The Lady Huskies were able to hold off the Vikings in the fifth set to win the match, 15-10.

“This was a big win for varsity. It was a battle and all the ladies should be proud of their perseverance to come out with a win after five tough sets,” said Ashe County head coach Tania Rollins.

Senior Lynsey Aldridge led the way with 14 of the team’s 30 kills. Junior Mattie Joines had five kills, Gianna Federico had four, Rayna Blevins recorded three kills, Corinne Jones had three kills and Haley Phipps added one kill.

Ashe had another strong night serving the ball with only three errors in 53 serve attempts. Aldridge had two aces while Joines, Blevins, Phipps, Hailey Taylor and Jada McClure each added one serving ace.

McClure led Ashe with 23 digs followed closely by Taylor with 20.

Senior Lyndsi Goodman assisted on 21 of Ashe’s points while Phipps chipped in nine assists.

Ashe improved to 1-2 on the season while Avery County dropped to 1-3.

JV volleyball

In the junior varsity contest, the Lady Huskies came away with a 2-1 victory. This marks the second win in three games for the JV squad.

Sophomore Cori Richardson had five service aces and saw Ashe score eight points off of her serve. Richardson added 12 attacks and seven kills.

Fellow sophomore Emma Shepherd also had a good match with two service aces, 13 attacks and five kills.

Players of the Week

This week’s Players of the Week from Coach Rollins are seniors Lynsey Aldridge and Lyndsi Goodman and sophomore Mattie Joines. Alridge led the team with two service aces, 45 attacks and 14 kills. Goodman was very consistent as one of the setters with 47 ball handling assists and 21 assists that led to kills. Joines had 20 attacks, five kills and two blocks.
