ASHE COUNTY — Fall is quickly approaching for the High Country and along with cooler weather, turning leaves, and shorter days comes a pack of Little Huskies sporting cleats, pads and helmets.
The Ashe Youth Football League has just kicked off its 2016 season. Little Huskies ranging from first grade through sixth grade are forming a pack of over 115 strong. These Huskies are united together in their Ashe County High Purple and have a common goal to develop themselves into the future of Ashe County football.
Ashe County Youth Football is a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching the proper fundamentals of football. This organization strives to coach and teach the youth of Ashe County in the proper and safe way to play a truly American sport.
The board, coaches and volunteers challenge players physically and mentally to prepare them for success on and off the field. Football is a sport in which every player has a job and an impact on each play. Players quickly learn that the outcome on the field is directly related to the work put in at practice learning plays, drills, and physical conditioning.
The Ashe County Youth Huskies participate in the Blue Ridge Football League. The league consists of teams from Ashe County, Alleghany County, East Wilkes, Elkin, North Wilkes, West Wilkes, and Central Wilkes. The Little Huskies are divided by age with 1st/2nd grade, 3rd/4th grade, and 5th/6th grade teams.
Within the three divisions the teams are also divided into JV and Varsity groups to provide maximum playing time and opportunity for all players. The entire Blue Ridge League just participated in an all-day annual Jamboree hosted this year by Elkin. The Jamboree provided a round robin scrimmage format which allowed each team offensive and defensive series against each team in the league.
The season officially kicked off Saturday, Aug. 27 with all teams traveling to Elkin. Throughout the remainder of the season, lasting through the end of October, the Huskies will travel to or host each of the Blue Ridge League teams. The season will end in an elimination playoff format leading to a winner-take-all “Super Bowl” for each of the age division groups.
The Youth Huskies get the privilege to showcase their skills center stage on the high school football fields that they will one day compete on as full grown Huskies. On most dates, the Youth Huskies are joined by the Ashe County Middle School Bulldogs as the final game of the day. Other exciting opportunities are currently being scheduled for the Huskies including safety seminars by outside organizations and a head-to-head battle with some of the Boone/Watauga County youth at “The Rock” at Appalachian State University.
If you are a fan of football, game day with Ashe Youth Football will not disappoint. These Huskies may be physically smaller than their high school counterparts, but their hearts are just as big. Other than the splash of digital camouflage on their shoulders and the snarling husky on their helmets, you will not have to squint hard to see the future of Ashe County football in front of your very eyes.
A day with this pack is full of action from start to finish. These Huskies battle like men, but at the end of the day make their way back to family and friends showered with hugs, high-fives, thumbs up, and the occasional seat in mom’s lap.
Please come out and support these mini monsters of the gridiron, and prepare yourself for some of the best football action around.
