WEST JEFFERSON — For the Scott Family, it was certainly a Labor Day to remember with a pair of father-son teams taking home the top spot in the Labor Day Open held at Mountain Aire on Monday.
In the A-Flight, Randall and Trey Scott rallied from six shots down after the first day to win the tournament by two strokes.
“We knew we had to post a low score, we didn’t start out the best but we put six birdies in a row together and with five holes to go, we heard from the group behind us that the leaders had slipped up a little bit so we wanted to finish strong,” said Trey. “We finished the last five holes at three-under-par.”
The Captain’s Choice format allowed each golfer to tee off. After that, both golfers played from wherever they felt the best tee shot landed. The best ball after that resulted in the score.
On the 15th hole, Trey said he hit a tee shot about 90 yards away from the green.
“The ball was in the trees on the right side. I hit a sand wedge over the tree and it ended up landing about eight inches from the hole,” he said.
On the next hole, Trey chipped a shot hoping to get close enough to the hole to save par. However, the chip shot was right on the money and rolled in for a birdie.
“It was just one of those days where it seemed like every time we needed a clutch shot, it was there,” Trey said. “It was a lot of fun to come back from six shots like that and win. If we had played well the first day and played bad the second day but still won, it wouldn’t have been nearly as fun.”
In the B-Flight tourney, it was Chad and Caleb Scott that shot identical rounds of 69 to win by three shots.
