WEST JEFFERSON — The Ashe County Little Huskies have two weeks of play in the books.
The first and second grade team started off the year with a pair of tough losses. In week one, Elkin defeated the Huskies, 22-6. Most recently, Alleghany came away with a 22-0 win over Ashe County.
While the team is fairly inexperienced with most of the second grade players playing football for the first time, they are improving each practice and the coaches have been working hard to teach them the basic fundamentals of the game and the coaches are looking forward to seeing the players get better each week.
In the third and fourth grade division, there is a varsity and junior varsity team with both squads opening the season with 2-0 records.
The varsity team handled Elkin in the first week ,22-8, and then dominated Alleghany in week two with a 30-0 victory. The JV players beat West Wilkes in the first week, 34-12, and scratched out an 8-0 win over Alleghany in week two.
A lot of players on the third and fourth grade team were on last year’s second grade championship team and are certainly seeing the results carry over to this season. The coaches are proud of the heart and athleticism from this group on the field.
For the fifth and sixth graders, the varsity team is off to a 1-1 start. The Huskies beat Elkin to open up the season, 28-8, but were defeated by Alleghany last week, 28-8. The JV team also stumbled a bit last week against Alleghany, falling 14-0.
This Saturday, the Little Huskies will be at Ashe County High School for a group of home games facing off against Wilkes Central. Games begin at 11 a.m. with the first and second graders, followed by JV third and fourth grade at noon, varsity third and fourth grade at 1 p.m., fifth and sixth grade at 2:30 p.m. and Ashe County Middle School action at 4 p.m.
