WEST JEFFERSON — The Ashe County Lady Huskies added to their win total at the midpoint of the 2016 season, picking up three wins recently, including a non-conference season sweep of West Caldwell and a conference victory over Wilkes Central.

Sept. 12: Ashe 3, West Caldwell 2

Junior Mattie Joines had a big match tallying 17 kills to help lead Ashe to a win at West Caldwell. Ashe won the first set, 25-20 before West Caldwell rallied to win the next two sets, 25-19 and 25-22.

Needing a big win to force a fifth set, Ashe was able to hang on for a 26-24 win. In the fifth set tiebreaker, Ashe cruised to a 15-5 win.

Senior Lynsey Aldridge added nine kills while Gianna Federico and Bella Potter each had five.

Ashe had a total of 13 service aces in the win. Joines had six of those while Aldridge and Lyndsi Goodman both added two aces.

Jada McClure led Ashe with 23 digs. Aldridge had 12 and Hailey Taylor had six. Goodman chipped in 17 assists to lead the way.

Sept. 13: Ashe 3, Wilkes Central 0

Ashe picked up a much-needed conference victory with a three set sweep of Wilkes Central. Ashe took the first set, 25-21, and followed that up with 25-16 and 25-17 wins in the final two sets.

Sept. 15: East Wilkes 3, Ashe 0

The Lady Huskies traveled to East Wilkes to take on the Cardinals. East Wilkes swept Ashe in three sets with scores of 25-22, 25-14 and 25-15

Lauren Johnson had six kills for the Cardinals and Kallie Blackburn added five. Johnson also had a team-high six aces as the Cardinals had a strong night serving the ball, catching Ashe off guard for 18 serving aces as a team.

Sept. 19: Ashe 3, West Caldwell 0.

In the second matchup of the season against the Warriors, Ashe scored a win much easier than they did in the previous match that needed all five sets to determine a winner.

Ashe took the first set by a 25-10 score and followed that with an identical 25-10 victory in the second set. In the third and final set, the Warriors were able to score a few more points, but Ashe still pulled off the sweep with a 25-16 score.

Sept. 20: North Wilkes 3, Ashe 1

The Lady Huskies hit the road to conference-leading North Wilkes. The Vikings won the first two sets by 25-19 and 25-13 scores.

Ashe stormed back to take the third set by a 25-23 score.

Needing a win to force a tie breaking set, Ashe gave it all they had in the fourth set but North Wilkes was able to hang on for a 27-25 victory.
