Lady Huskies hand Elkin first MVAC loss

WEST JEFFERSON — The final home tennis match of the season turned out to be arguably Ashe County’s biggest win of the season on Friday.

Ashe honored its seniors with a big 5-4 victory over Elkin. This was the first Mountain Valley Athletic Conference defeat for the Lady Elks.

“I am so proud of these ladies,” said Ashe County head coach Larry Dix.

The Lady Huskies picked up three singles wins and two doubles wins in the match that was supposed to take place on Thursday but was interrupted by rain.

Elkin top seed Mattie Timmerman defeated Caroline Current, 8-3.

Ashe’s Morgan Church won by forfeit in the second seeded match over Brianna Dreyer.

The third and fourth seeded matches went Elkin’s way. Bianka Soos defeated Anna Corley, 8-1, and Emma Aldridge was an 8-2 winner against Kaylie Fernandez.

The final two singles matches were big wins for Ashe. MacKenzie Woods picked up an 8-4 victory over Sydney Kelly and Amber Miller scored an 8-4 win over Kenley Wells.

Elkin won the first doubles match with the team of Timmerman and Soos beating Current and Church by an 8-4 score.

Trailing 4-3 in the overall match score, Ashe needed the remaining two doubles teams to come up big.

Corley and Wood answered the bell with a hard-fought 8-6 victory over Kelly and Aldridge.

The senior duo of Fernandez and Miller clinched the match for Ashe with an 8-4 win over Wells and Gracie Luffman.

Ashe is now 10-5 overall and 8-3 in the MVAC while Elkin dropped to 13-4 overall and 11-1 in the MVAC.

This was the fourth straight win for Ashe. The previous match was an 8-0 over West Wilkes on Sept. 22.
