WILKESBORO — It was another good week of soccer for the Ashe County Huskies. The team added a pair of road wins that included a thrilling shootout win over Wilkes Central to cap off the season sweep of the Eagles.
Ashe took an early lead over the Eagles on Monday with a goal from Caleb Key in the sixth minute.
Alec Roland gave the Huskies a 2-0 lead five minutes into the second half.
Wilkes Central battled back with a pair of goals to force overtime. Andy Gomez netted the first Eagle score and then Daniel Vimont tied the match up with three minutes to play.
After both 10-minute overtime sessions came and went with no scoring, the teams headed to a shootout.
In the shootout, Husky keeper Noah Blevins came up big. After Josh Brettschneider gave Ashe a 3-2 lead in the shootout, Blevins got a huge save on Vimont after the previous Eagle shooter missed the net.
Key stepped to the line and buried a shot by the Central keeper to clinch the victory.
On Wednesday, Ashe was back on the road at East Wilkes. The Cardinals were also coming off of a big win, a road victory at West Wilkes.
After a bit of a shaky first half from the Huskies that saw both teams play to a 2-2 tie, Ashe woke up in the second half with three goals to take a 5-2 victory.
The Huskies are now 14-7 overall and 10-2 in the MVAC. Ashe will finish the regular season this week with a pair of home matches against North Wilkes and West Wilkes.
