WEST JEFFERSON — Ashe County picked up five victories over Mitchell County in the first home match of the season on Tuesday.
The overall team score went to Mitchell by a 54-27 decision, however the majority of those points came from forfeit victories. The teams each won four weight classes where each school had a wrestler.
The evening started with a match in the 106-pound division. Mitchell’s Dakota Tehandon pinned Ashe’s Trent Baker in 47 seconds.
Mitchell won the next three weight classes by forfeit. Coltin Marlowe (113), Brandon McGee (120) and Malachi Staton (126) picked up the wins.
In the 132-pound class, freshman Cody Mullis got the first win for the Huskies with a 6-3 decision victory over Josh Forbes.
Next up at 138 points, Samuel Deyton was able to pin Ashe’s Blake Hurley in the first period, ending the match in 50 seconds.
The 145-pound class was a forfeit win for Mitchell’s Israel Maltba.
At 152 pounds, Husky grappler Harley Miller worked hard to earn a pinfall victory over Zebulon McKinney in 1:29.
Mitchell answered back with a victory at 160 pounds. Ryan Richardson pinned Preston Mash in 1:43.
The next two weight classes went down as Husky victories.
170-pounder John Reavis made it look easy against Kolton Hoilman, pinning his opponent in 44 seconds.
At 182 pounds, Jake Shepherd made quick work of Bryan Hernandez, pinning him in just 24 seconds.
The final match of the night was at 195 pounds. Mitchell’s Hunter Byrd was able to pin Isaac Miller with 11 seconds left in the first period.
Ashe’s Zach Bare won by forfeit at 220 pounds and Mitchell heavyweight Samuel Shook won by forfeit at 285 pounds.
Next up for the Huskies will be a quad match in Newland with Avery County, Watauga and Morganton-Patton on Tuesday.
